Everyone that starts will finish. If you can walk only one mile, we will give you a ride from station to station and let you walk through with your friends and help at each station in between times.
This 50/20 is like no other. Regular inspirational stations will line the course. You will be inspired by music and leaders, you will grow closer to God and your friends, and you will just have fun. You will be surrounded by like-minded people, great food, and the most inspiring scenery and activities you can imagine.
Hike 50 miles in 20 hours with your friends in one of the most beautiful, inspiring places in the world. Ruby Valley is lined by the majestic
Ruby Mountains on one side and the Ruby Mashes and beautiful farm land on the other side.
The 50/20 will start at 4:00 AM at the North Side of Harrison Pass. See the map directions. If you do not plan on walking the full 50 miles, join us when you can but plan to spend the whole day. The event will be over after dinner at the Ruby Valley Church (12 AM for the last walker). Every 4 or so miles, walkers will have access to water and food and motivational stations. Walkers will be supported with supervision and medical and emotional support always.
Food and drink will be provided along the way but if you have any special needs (or wants), they can be left with the medical vehicle. Bring a very good broken in (used for a while) pair of shoes and a number of good socks. You will have the opportunity to change them if you need to. Wear comfortable clothes with layers. It may be cold in the morning and evening. Bring a hat (it could be hot during the day) and sunscreen. We have medical supplies for blisters and chapping.
The best way to prepare is to go on regular long walks and hikes. It is highly encouraged that you find a training plan and follow it. The course is primarily on a well-maintained gravel road so practice as much as possible on this type of terrain.
The course starts on the north side (Spring Creek side) of Harrison Pass, 7 miles from the summit and just inside the Forest Services and follows a canyon trail that is partly paved for about 4 miles. The path ends on the main road two miles below the summit. The course goes 4 miles down the pass to the Ruby Valley road. Turn left and go 7.2 miles to the Ruby Marshes. At this point, cars will have to turn around and back track. Walkers cross the marsh and go through a gate to the hot springs and follow a dirt road about 3 miles back to the main road. The remainder of the course follows the road all the way through Ruby Valley ending at the Ruby Valley Church. See map.
The Ruby Mountains are the iconic landmark in Elko County. The walk is mostly flat except for the first 10 miles where we cut right though the heart of the mountain over the historic Harrison Pass. The first 5 miles (as the sun comes up) are on a paved mountain trail up Harrison Pass. The trail ends on the main road and climbs for another 2 miles to the summit (7,247 feet). The next four miles curves down the pass through land formations that will take your breath away.
The full 50/20 runs right at the base of these beautiful mountains, below Overland Lake, and not far from Hidden Lakes and Soldier Basin.
The 50/20 will walk though the world famous Ruby Marshes. We will walk on the dikes that crisscross this wildlife preserve. Those that support walkers may enjoy a bit of fishing and canoeing.
The marsh is one of the most remote refuges in the lower 48 states. The refuge encompasses 39,928 acres of marsh, meadows, grasslands, and brush-covered upland habitats.
The 50/20 goes right by a wonderful hot springs. Volunteers will have time to take a swim!
The Ruby Valley hot spring is a primitive natural pristine hot spring gem near the Ruby Valley Refuge. There are pools and runoffs in a marsh area with various temperatures. There is a deep large hot spring pool that averages 99 degrees.
This 50/20 is more of an adventure than a walk. Please do not sign up unless you plan to spend the whole day. We want every physical preparedness level to join us. If you can walk three miles, that is fine. We will move you from station to station and expect you to cheer other walkers on and volunteer to help out at the stations before you walk through with your friends.
Stations will be every 3-5 miles and are experiences. We have a youth committee that are designing these stations. We will tell you experiences ranging from spiritual moments to water play will be a part of this all-day experience.
We will need a nurse, transportation, food support, and volunteers to run stations. We anticipate many participates that will not walk the whole way that will support the stations along the way. Please sign up and list how you want to help.
